Perhaps the largest and most popular, however, is the Christmas market found at the Gedachtniskirche. This market, which is located along the bustling boulevard of Kurfurstendamm, is favored by locals and tourists alike for its romantic atmosphere and expansively diverse array of shops and gifts. More than four million visitors each year flock to the market in search of everything from Christmas decorations to unique jewelry and art works, fashioned by the capitol's never-ending supply of innovative artists. Across from the market, Berlin's department stores jovially compete for the best Christmas displays in the city, while the Christmas huts themselves are merrily illuminated by thousands of white Christmas lights.
Above the bustling shoppers looms the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche, a proud old church that was partially destroyed in the 1943 bombing attack on Berlin. The church has been left mostly untouched since the bombing, as a symbol of fortitude for West Berliners and of the loss that accompanies war.
