Memorial to the Berlin Wall
The Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer (Memorial to the Berlin Wall) is dedicated to "the memory of the division of the city from August 13, 1961 to November 9, 1989, and in memory of the victims of the communist tyranny." Ten years after the wall fell, this documentation center opened. Inside the center, visitors can expect to see a timeline of the Berlin Wall's history, reading and listening stations to take in newsreels that dramatically present the story of the divided city, and computer terminals where visitors can search for information on specific topics.

The memorial also includes a tower with a viewing platform over what was once referred to as the "death strip" where East Berliners attempting escape were shot. From the platform, visitors can also observe a rebuilt section of the wall and the Chapel of Reconciliation, a structure of wooden slats built on the site of a church that was stranded in the East Berlin death strip by the construction of the wall.

For visitors who want to understand the history of the divided Berlin, a tour that includes this site, plus the House at Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate is recommended.
