Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas (Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe) - Berlin Hotels .com
Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas (Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe) is dedicated to the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust. It comprises an underground information center and an above-ground memorial that includes 2,711 concrete stelae arranged on a 4.7-acre site near
Unter den Linden in such a way that visitors can walk into and through them. Stelae of heights from 8 inches to 15 feet 9 inches are positioned in a grid and in varying sizes that suggest waves. No particular path is indicated, and visitors quickly discover that as they walk further, they become disoriented among the taller stones and unsure of which way they came in or where to exit -- the experience the site's designers had envisioned.
The underground information center recounts the history of the Holocaust, and lists the names of all its known Jewish victims. Guided tours, group tours (with advance booking), and audio tours are available. Visitors interested in the history of Germany under the Third Reich may also want to include the Topography of Terror and Wannsee Villa in their tours.
Hours:
Field of stelae open every day throughout the year. Information Center open April through September, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (last entrance 7.15 p.m.); underground exhibition open October through March, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (last entrance 6.15 p.m.); closed Mondays.
