Potsdamer Platz, Berlin
Renowned for its contemporary architecture, nightlife, festivals, and avant-garde arts, Berlin has always had a knack for reinventing itself. Many sights that have stood for a hundred years or more, like the Reichstag, survived near destruction through wars and political change, and re-emerged as modern landmarks on the face of Germany's ever-changing capitol.

As the third most visited destination for travelers in the European Union, there's much more to this metropolis than historical sights such as the Brandenburg Gate and Haus at Checkpoint Charlie.

Although Berlin has no true center, the Potsdamer Platz - Sony Center comes closest to representing the sparkling new face of the city. Enclosed by an illuminated umbrella-like roof, this mecca of entertainment features more than 40 cinema screens, shops, restaurants, and art and film museums.

Primo shopping destinations in the city include the fashionable Ku'Damm boulevard -- the Champs-Elysees of Berlin -- and the largest department store in all of continental Europe, Kaufhaus des Westens, or KaDaWe, as it's better known.

Two sites near Mitte offer visitors incredible views of central Berlin: the Berliner Dom; and the third largest tower in Europe, the Fernsehturm TV Tower, where guests can dine at great heights at a spectacular revolving restaurant.

Another wonderful way to experience the city is by water. Winding along the Spree River, Boat Tours on the Spree River run throughout the day, with hop-on and hop-off stops near many of Berlin's memorable landmarks.

Featuring the world's largest collection of animal species, the Berlin Zoooligical Garden is a hit with the whole family -- especially kids, who have their own petting zoo and playground area. Located in the Berlin Tiergarten since 1844, the zoo is also situated next to the Zoo Aquarium.
