Schwules Museum - Berlin Hotels .com
With the specific purpose of working against "stereotypes and stigmas," the privately-owned Schwules Museum (Gay Museum) represents multiple facets of the homosexual experience in society. Both the permanent collection and changing thematic exhibits use photographs, private and official documents, books, costumes, sculptor, paintings, and multi-media installations to tell stories of real people and of how society has represented homosexuality.
Established in the late 1980's, and situated in the district of West Berlin -- an area known for its gay population -- the museum has several diverse collections and includes memoirs, oral histories, literary, and artistic works. The permanent exhibition is located on the ground floor, and an extensive library with a variety of books, magazines, photos, and videos occupies the first and second floors. Visitors will be taken through nearly two centuries of social change with a special emphasis on the history of homosexuals in Berlin and homosexuals living under the Nazi regime.
