Berlin's Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts) displays exhibits from all facets of European applied art. One of the oldest museums of its kind in Germany, it has 7,000 ssquare meters of exhibition space. Here you'll find examples of skilled craftsmanship over the centuries in metal, wood, ceramic, glass, clay and in many other media. Highlights include the the famous Guelph Treasure (Welfenschatz) and the "Baptismal font of Emperor Barbarossa," both examples of medieval gold work. Venetian glass, tapestries, and furniture from the Italian Renaissance provide a glimpse into the life of Italian noble of the era.
One highlight is the famous Guelph Treasure, which consists of portable altars and crucifixes from the 11 and 12th century. On the ground floor, the extravagant lifestyle of Italian nobles is displayed, with a collection of furniture, tapestries, and glazed earthenware from the European courts. Another focus is the New Collection, held on the lower floor. It comprises arts and crafts of the twentieth century and examples of modern industrial products.
