Beate Uhse Erotik-Museum - Berlin Hotels .com
Beate Uhse is a household name in Germany. She started the first sex shop in the country right after WWII and is now the proprietor of chain of shops (including one at the Frankfurt International Airport) along with a huge sex-related merchandising business.
Located in the nighborhood, the Beate Uhse Erotik-Museum is entirely devoted to the art and history of sex. It attracts many visitors each year and is now in the top five of Berlin's most visited museums. The collection includes more than 5,000 relics from around the world, including carved phalli from Bali, African fertility masks, and Peruvian drinking vessels. There are modern pieces as well -- most noticeably, life-size dioramas that depict BDSM and fetishism.
This museum also boasts an extensive Asian collection with Japanese shunga art and the Chinese "Wedding Tiles" -- eighteenth and nineteenth century paintings done on silk, meant to educate newly married couples about sex. Adventurous visitors will want to venture downstairs. The lower floors consist of a gigantic sex superstore, complete with video cabins and a plethora of sexual accessories.
