French Cathedral - Berlin
In the charming Gendarmenmarkt square in Berlin's Mitte district, visitors from around the world flock to see Berlin's Konzerthaus and the twin architecture of the Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral) and the Franzoesischer Dom (French Cathedral).

Built between 1701 and 1705, the French Cathedral was created by the French Huguenots fleeing persecution in their native country and seeking refuge in more tolerant Protestant Berlin. In 1785, the tower and porticos were added to make the French Cathedral mirror the German Cathedral's design across the way.

Today, the Franzoesischer Dom houses the Hugenottenmuseum (Huguenot Museum), which displays its large collection of art and artifacts to document the history of the Huguenots in Berlin and surrounding areas. The refugee Huguenots brought an influx of wealth, artistry and skills with them to their new home, and the Hugenottenmuseum offers an interesting glimpse of their effect on Berlin culture.

The French Cathedral also has its own restaurant and a platform for taking in the view.

The Hugenottenmuseum is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon until 5 p.m., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays, and is closed on Mondays.
