Built as a summer residence for Sophie Charlotte from 1695 to 1699, the palace was expanded soon after the coronation of the Elector as King Friedrich I of Prussia in the architectural style of Versailles. Similar to the Berliner Dom, Schloss Charlottenburg was painstakingly restored after being severely damaged in World War II. Also like Berlin's largest cathedral, the palace features a mausoleum, with sarcophagi of Queen Luise and Friedrich Wilhelm III, among others. The famous excavations of Heinrich Schliemann from Troy can also be found in the former palace theater, now the Museum for Pre- and Early History. A stroll through the palace park grounds, one of the most pleasant oases in Berlin, is a great way to begin or end your visit.
Schloss Charlottenburg is open to the public Tuesdays thorugh Sunday. The Old Palace is open 9-5pm; the New Wing is open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the summer season and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the winter.
