Reichstag
One of the most historically significant destinations of the city, the Reichstag has seen great changes since it was built for the newly founded German state in 1884-94. It was nearly destroyed by fire at one point, and it survived both the rise and fall of the Third Reich as well as the rise and fall of Communism. The country's equivalent of the U.S. Capitol Building, this building is the seat of the German Bundestag (federal government).

Visitors are drawn to the reconstructed site to spiral up the rooftop terrace of the building's enormous glass and metal dome for panoramic views of central Berlin. The main hall of the building can also be seen from the cupola. Situated next to the Berlin Wall before the unification, the Reichstag is within easy walking distance of the iconic Brandenburg Gate. Open daily from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m., the Reichstag is free and open to the public.
