Berliner Dom
Built between 1895 and 1905, the Berliner Dom, famous for its massive copper dome, is the Protestant equivalent of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, attracting thousands of visitors each year from Germany and abroad. The largest cathedral in Berlin, the Berliner Dom looks out over the Lustgarten, a park originally developed as the private garden of the former palace, Berliner Stadtschloss.

Over the centuries, this Museum Island site in central Berlin--once the court cathedral to Prussia's royal family -- has transformed in design from Baroque to classicist, and back to Baroque with inspiration from the Italian Renaissance. Severely damaged in World War II, the reconstructed cathedral was not opened again until 1993. Now, when church isn't in session, visitors can tour the ornately decorated interior of the cathedral, which features the humbling Sauer's Organ, a golden altar frieze of the 12 apostles, and, like Schloss Charlottenburg, sarcophagi, including the 1530 tomb of the Great Elector. The Berliner Dom is open for tours 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday to Saturdays; noon - 8 p.m. Sundays and holidays.
