Built in the early 1740s by the king's architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, the Staatsoper was Germany's first free-standing opera house -- before this, opera houses were always attached to the palace -- and the largest opera house in Europe at that time. The stunning architecture is in the style of a Corinthian temple, and the interior has a palatial rococo design.
The first building was completely destroyed in World War II but, using Knobelsdorff's original design, the Staatsoper was carefully reconstructed in the early 1950s and brought to full restoration by 1986.
Staatsoper Unter den Linden has its own opera company and once claimed Richard Strauss as its chief conductor. Today the Staatsoper Unter den Linden is under the well-respected direction of Daniel Barenboim and continues to produce a generous selection of opera classics, as well as contemporary work, recovered pieces, classical concerts, and innovative children's programming.
In addition, the Staatsoper frequently hosts Berlin's beloved Staatsballett company. (Staatsballett Berlin also performs at the Deutsche Oper and the Komische Oper, Berlin's other two leading opera houses.)
