Emphasizing productions of nineteenth and twentieth century German and Italian operas, the Deutsche Oper also produces contemporary operas and reclaimed works, is host to a variety of classical and world music concerts, and has extensive children's programming. The opera house is a regular venue for Berlin's world-renowned Staatsballett company as well as for many touring international dance troupes.
The Deutsche Oper offers good views from all of its 1,865 seats, from the cheapest back rows to the elegant side balconies--and acoustic quality is rich throughout the space. The Deutsche Oper is also a historic cultural site for West Berlin: The new building was finished just after the wall went up in 1961, making it the only opera stage available to West Berliners after the wall cut off access to the Staatsoper and Komische Oper on the eastern side.
