Berliner Philharmonie, Berlin
The innovative Berliner Philharmonie, home to the renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Berliner Philharmoniker), is part of the Kulturforum complex located in Berlin's scenic Tiergarten district.

Built between 1960 and 1963, the Berliner Philharmonie was designed by Hans Scharoun and features a tent-like roof, which earned it the nickname "Circus Karajani," after the conductor Herbert von Karajan who led the Berliner Philharmonic for 35 years.

The Berliner Philharmonie's main hall seats 2,440 people in a circular, asymmetrical arrangement around a central stage, designed to diminish the distance between performer and audience and to provide every seat with an excellent view. Great attention was also paid to the concert hall's acoustical design, making the sound throughout the space reliably rich.

The Berliner Philharmonie also houses a slightly smaller Chamber Music Hall (Kammermusiksaal), as well as a Musicologist Institute and a Museum of Musical Instruments (Musikinstrumenten-Museum).
