Brandenburg Gate, Berlin
As the capital of Germany, Berlin has faced many obstacles. Since the 13th century, the city has been the capital of Prussia, German Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and East Germany. It was heavily damaged by two World Wars and divided by the Berlin Wall for 28 years. But despite its tumultuous past, the city has been able to bounce back several times and currently enjoys being the unofficial capital of Western culture.

Home to 3.4 million people, Berlin is the second largest city in the European Union. It is a major center of commerce, politics, media and art. Federal buildings, museums, major universities and commercial buildings can all be found here. The city also has plenty of grandiose architecture; modern building juxtaposed against the historical buildings that were able to survive the many wars the city has witnessed.

As an extremely liberal city, Germans embrace people's differences. It has a sizable city centre in the Mitte area, a popular gay district in Kreuzber and a red-light district that puts Amsterdam to shame. Nightlife in Berlin is an experience, as the bars and clubs can be found all over in the city and in the oddest locations.

As a tourist, the city is easy to explore, thanks to the efficient U-Bahn, or subway, system, which covers 94.3 miles across nine lines.
